Southern Star Observation Wheel, Docklands Melbourne

Located within the new dynamic Waterfront City precinct at Docklands, just a few minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, Southern Star presents an experience that’s like nothing on earth.

Construction

  • The huge structure was manufactured in Melbourne.
  • Columns were manufactured in Tasmania.
  • The cabins, hubs & spindle were manufactured in Japan.
Weights & Measure
  • Southern Star’s hub & bearing weigh 150 tonnes – equivalent to just over five city trams stacked on top of each other.
  • The two asymmetric support columns each weigh a hefty 73 tonnes. If you had to eat the same weight in meat pies, you’ll be munching into 365,000 pastries.Still hungry?
  • Overall 1,650 tonnes of steel was used in construction – that’s as heavy 3,300 Melbourne Cup racehorses. That’s a lot of horses.
  • The total length of steel piping is 10 kilometres long – meaning you could wrap the length around the Melbourne Cricket Ground (M.C.G) just over 10 times.
  • For the perfect finish, 12,500 square metres of paint covers Southern Star. You could use the same amount to paint a footpath to Sydney!

Structure

  • Southern Star reaches 120 metres high in the sky – equal in height to a 40-storey building.
  • Relax as you travel through the sky – the Southern Star rotates at 11 metres per minute. That’s about twice the speed of the three-toed sloth.
  • Designed as a 7 pointed star, you’ll notice more 7 pointed stars on the Australian flag.

Cabins

  • If you have 420 best friends, you can fill the Southern Star cabins as it goes around – a lot more fun than travelling in the equivalent of 105 cabs!
  • Each cabin measures 5.7 metres long and 3.7 metres wide – big enough to drive a car inside.

To help you take the best photos, the cabins are fully powered, ensuring a flat and stable platform for unobstructed views. Plus, there’s a central bench seat you can walk around, floor to ceiling glass and an intercom to ground control.

Viewing

Which Melbourne icons can you spot? Enjoy 360° panoramic vistas and see up to 40 kilometres from top – peer down into the City then across Victoria to as far as the Dandenong Ranges.

LED Lighting

You won't miss Southern Star at night - 3.7 kilometres of LED lighting will set the sky alight with a dazzling, state-of-the-art light display.

Unique

  • There’s only one observation wheel in the southern hemisphere – right here!
  • You can also gaze in wonder at the world-first LED lighting system. It'll feel like New Year’s Eve every night!
